The China Financial Sector Training Scheme supports economic reform in China by increasing the capacity of Chinese financial organisations to develop the expertise necessary for a market economy. The programme is funded by the Department for International Development and managed by the British Council.

The programme consists of the following activities:

  • Briefing meetings – for Chinese organisations, to provide information about how to participate. Contact the British Council in China for details.

  • Sector Planning Programmes – study tours to the UK for senior managers from participating Chinese organisations to provide an overview of the industry in the UK:
    the regulatory and supervisory framework,
the commercial environment, including visits to leading companies,
the professional bodies and trade associations that support the industry in the UK.

  • Selection of candidates – 225 young professionals will be selected from the Chinese financial sector to undertake work attachments with companies in the UK. Candidates undergo a rigorous selection process, competing within their organisation to be nominated to the British Council. Candidates are then further screened for language ability and through interviews.

  • Placing participants – the British Council works with Digby Morgan . Digby Morgan is a specialist executive search, selection and human resources consultancy.

  • China based training – in order to prepare participants to perform effectively in the UK, they undertake induction in China at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (SUFE). This focuses on ensuring that participants have a sound understanding of international finance and economics, and begins to focus on the language needs of participants working in the UK.

  • UK based training  is undertaken at the Canterbury Business School and provides both an introduction to British life as well as economic and monetary briefing on the UK economy. English language training is provided by Pilgrims.

  • Work attachments are arranged at financial sector institutions,
throughout the United Kingdom, and occasionally elsewhere in Europe and Asia.

  • Follow-up is arranged by the British Council to support returned participants in introducing change in their workplace in China.
